Got Milk?

The Udderly EZ Mare Milker™

As most horse owners know foals are born immune deficient and need to receive temporary protection from bacteria through the immunoglobulin in the mare's colostrum within a very short time after birth  It is this colostrum that stimulates the foals own immune response development. many veterinarians now think it is important to get colostrum into the foal within the first hour of birth, often before the foal is up and nursing in order to provide the benefits that the mare's milk affords.

Colostrum serves many of the needs of a newborn foal. It provides an early source of energy in the critical time right after foaling through the easily digestible fat content. It also provides a source of calories to fuel the foal's body heat mechanism, it stimulates the gut to facilitate bowel movements and, most importantly, it provides for the future health of the foal through the antibodies that transfer to the foal from the mare's milk in the very early stages of nursing.

Now there is an easy solution to milking your mares to obtain the vital colostrum so necessary to your foal's health. It is the Udderly EZ Mare Milker developed by Buck Wheeler of EZ Animal products.

The Udderly EZ Mare Milkeris the safest and most effective large domestic animal milk and colostrum collection device available. It can be used on horses of all sizes, ponies, sheep, goats, donkeys, llamas, zebras, camels and miniature cows.

The Mare Milker comes packaged with two sizes of extraction cylinders. The#1 small size extraction cylinder accommodates small or maiden mares, sheep and goats. The #2 large size extraction cylinder is for older or larger mares, cattle and larger exotic animals.  These extraction cylinders have been designed to fit the unique shape of the mare's udder and have a rolled lip to prevent harm to the udder.

The Udderly EZ Mare Milker™ features:

It’s  to use……

Instructions:

Always wash the mare’s udder before using the Udderly EZ Mare Milker or allowing the foal to nurse. A clean mare reduces chances of unwanted bacteria reaching the foal before its immune responses begin to develop.

1. Wash mare's udder.

2.Squeeze the teat and remove the wax plug if present.

3.Manually strip each teat at least twice to get a good flow of milk started.

  4. Place the cylinder directly over the teat and gently lift the pump unit against the udder.

5. Squeeze the handle at least 2-3 times; this will start the vacuum seal process, locking the unit onto the mother’s udder. (You may want to hold bottle with free hand until sealed).

6. As soon as the milk flow starts, stop pumping! When the flow slows or stops, start pumping again. You may need to repeat this sequence 3-4 times. When the flow stops, or you have collected an appropriate amount of liquid, stop and go to the next teat.

7. To release the vacuum on the pump, push bottle backwards toward hand trigger to release vacuum lock. Do not pull pump off udder

8. The first milking will generally collect between 8-12 ounces, although this may vary with each animal species or breed.

9. If the mother does not let her milk down immediately, you may have to massage her udder gently to get the flow started.

10. Do not overfill the collection bottle; only fill to the indicated line on the bottle. Never tilt pump backwards. This will allow the milk or colostrum to run into the air intake hole and damage the diaphragm in the pump.

11. If you have the Silicone Insert inside the Retractor you must either take it off or unscrew the bottle before pouring out milk or colostrum as it will get into the pump.

12. Pour the collected milk or colostrum into a feeding bottle and apply nipple or cap and freeze for your colostrum bank.

Final step - feeding the animal “mother’s first milk”.
